Hyderabad: Cyclone Helen made its expected landfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday around 12.30 pm and left a trail of destruction in Machlipatnam area in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. Electric poles, trees were spotted lying strewn all along the cyclone's path.

While the Government stated that two people died, unofficial sources put the toll at six. The severe cyclonic storm spared Prakasam district by changing its course and moving towards Krishna district. The Meteorological department had initially anticipated that the cyclone would hit the coast between Prakasam and Nellore. But it subsequently changed its course and made a landfall at Machilipatnam in Krishna district.

Krishna district has been the worst hit with huge crop losses reported throughout the district. Losses are expected to compound in the coming days with the Met department announcing that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in the area for another 36 hours.

Heavy rains lashed several areas in Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari, and Visakhapatnam districts.

Trees were uprooted disrupting traffic and communication and electricity towers were damaged as strong gales with speed reaching 100-110 kmph caused havoc in the coastal districts. The sea conditions were rough and the waves at some places rose to the height of three metres over the land.

With heavy rains likely to continuing in coastal districts over next 36 hours, authorities have evacuated about 17,000 people from low-lying areas.

C Parthasarathi, Commissioner (Disaster Management) said 66 relief camps were opened.
The high-speed winds damaged coconut, banana and paddy crops, and dealt another blow to farmers who are yet to recover from the heavy damage caused by last month's Cyclone Phailin and accompanying heavy rain.
Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall (25 cm or more) would occur over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari districts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 36 hours, said a bulletin by the IMD.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has reportedly deployed 20 rescue teams in the flood zone to provide help to the affected people. In West Godavari district heavy gales caused extensive damage to crops. Paddy crop in around 10,000 acres was flattened and coconut and mango trees were felled by the winds.
Different crops in around 40,000 acres were affected in the district. A Tahsildar of Penumantra D Satyanarayana (52) was killed on Friday in a car accident at Batlamangutur, while returning to his office after overseeing cyclone relief work.
Helen cyclone played havoc in Konaseema region which suffered large-scale destruction. Trees fell in large number blocking roads to hundreds of coastal villages.
Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard has despatched its ship Avantibai to rescue 20 fishermen from East Godavari district who were trapped in the rough sea. A Chetak helicopter of the Navy is also being pressed into service for the rescue operation; the Navy informed the General Administration department here.
