Hyderabad: Prof DN Reddy, Chairman of RAC (Recruitment and Assessment Centre), a DRDO organisation, stressed the need for a greater push in Higher Education, on par with Japan and China. Interacting with the media on the sidelines of a workshop on emerging trends in technical and higher education here on Saturday, he said, “In order to increase the GER (Gross Enrolment Ratio) to 30 per cent by 2020 in higher education, we need to have more universities and institutes of higher learning. At present our GER is just around 18 per cent, which is rather less as per international standards”

On the issue of revival of AICTE, Prof Reddy made it clear that UGC was not an alternative to AICTE rather it would continue as an advisory body in the days to come. “The guidelines that were released by the UGC with regard to technical and MBA and MCA institutes were just a copy of AICTE guidelines which had been in force for the past several years. UGC was only an interim arrangement which was made as the apex court ruled that AICTE would not have the power to sanction approvals for MBA colleges,” Reddy, who is a member of the UGC, explained.

“There might be some allegations against AICTE over the years that it had been granting permissions and renewals indiscriminately and without properly looking into ground realties. But AICTE has done a commendable job especially in the last three years when it has been made online” Reddy, who is also the vice-chairman of the AICTE southern wing, elaborated.

“About 30 to 40 per cent of seats have remained vacant in engineering colleges every year in all the states. If the colleges stop more intakes and focus on imparting quality education, we can expect desired results,” he felt.

BJP senior leader invited

The workshop, organised at a star hotel by private engineering and professional college managements, has assumed significance as a senior national executive member of the BJP, Muralidhar Rao, had attended it. Tipped to contest from Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency on BJP ticket in the next elections, Muralidhara Rao, who is also the party’s National Secretary, was considered close to Narendra Modi, its prime ministerial candidate.

Representatives of managements have heaped praise on Modi, saying that he is a committed national leader and a people’s soldier and India needs leaders like him.
