Akividu: Cock fights and gambling that are rampant during Sankranti festivities came to an end on Wednesday evening. Cock fights and gambling on them may be illegal, but it is no secret that on the eve of Sankranti, cock fight is rampant in West Godavari district with peoples’ representatives and other political leaders directly betting in cock fights, which they justify as a royal tradition. Such is the importance attached to this illegal sport on which a lot of money is at stake. Cock fights were held at various places during the night also under the illuminated open spaces on the village outskirts.

Undi MLA Siva, YSR Congress leader Raghuramakrishnam Raju and other prominent persons watched the cockfight at Undi. Leaders from Telangana were also present to watch the show. With the cock fights going on in full swing, liquor was also sold at the venues that ‘boosted’ the enthusiasm of the spectators besides the organisers. At the end of the show, the carcass of the defeated cock called ‘Koja’ was auctioned and a mad rush was seen participating in it. It is said that the defeated cock is roasted and is said to be delicious. Unconfirmed sources say in spite of restrictions on cock - fights, the cumulative stakes are said to be a staggering Rs 10 crore.
