Hyderabad: According to the sources, the AP Minorities Welfare Department sanctioned Rs 55.86 lakh additional funds for paying salaries including arrears to the staff, in addition to the maintenance of Mecca Masjid and Royal Mosque.

Omar Jaleel Syed, special secretary on Tuesday said that in response to the proposal sent by the Hyderabad district minority welfare officer for the grant of additional funds of Rs 88 lakh for the maintenance of the masjids, the department had released Rs 55.86 lakh.

According to the minority department sources said the expenditure on the maintenance of Mecca Masjid and Royal Mosque has been on a rise after the 2007 blast as the government had deployed security staff at both the mosques, and had also installed CCTV cameras. They said the funds released earlier were insufficient to carryout the extra activities like maintenance of CCTVs and involving additional security personnel.

Most of the cameras had become defunct due to lack of funds for maintenance, added minority department sources. They even brought out that the home guards were not getting salaries since three months.
