After a period of four months without seeing her family, 24-year-old Swathi was probably bursting with anticipation to visit her welcoming family, but she walked into a terrible death trap on Thursday, when she got into the S4 compartment of the Guwahati Express after booking her tickets through Tatkal. At 7:45 AM, a bomb that is suspected to have been placed directly under her seat exploded, making her the only casualty of the unfortunate twin blasts that happened in the train at Chennai Central Railway Station on May 1st.

Swathi was residing in White Field, Bangalore and had landed a job at TCS, Bangalore in January this year. She had applied for a week’s leave to see her family. Her parents who hail from Jagarlamudi village, from an agricultural background, moved to Guntur to provide better opportunities for their children.

Her parents, Parchuri Ramakrishna and Kamakshi, residing at 7/6 Srinagar have rushed to Chennai. Swathi had a sibling, Pradyumna, who is now pursuing engineering course at IIT, Mumbai. Her entire family is now mourning her death.

“Swathi told us she had booked the ticket through Tatkal since the reservations were not available. Her father is supposed to leave to Vijayawada and bring her back, but the disaster took her away from us,” said her grandmother, Katragadda Rajyalakshmi her voice trembling with sadness.

Swathi studied up to Class 10 at KLP Public School, completed Intermediate from St. Ann’s College and later pursued B. Tech (EEE) from JNTU, Hyderabad. She got through GATE and pursued M. Tech from the same institution. She then got a job at TCS in Bangalore. Her family said she had always excelled at her studies.

Family sources said Swathi had intended to settle down and told her parents that she would be marrying her class mate from Warangal.

A spokesperson for the TCS in Bangalore released the statement: "We are deeply shocked and saddened at this unfortunate loss of life of our colleague in this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time".
