Hyderabad: Swift intervention of the AP government prevented the two states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from falling into power crisis. In less than 24 hours the thermal power projects which halted power generation due to shortage of coal have resumed generation with the supply of required coal to the projects on Monday. The state government had taken up the issue with the Centre and urged it to see that coal supplies were restored immediately.

The officials of the APGENCO, the official power generation agency of the AP government, told The Hans India that following the Centre’s intervention coal supplies had resumed to RTPP (Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project ) in Kadapa and NTTP (Narla Tata Rao Thermal Project ) in Vijayawada.

The two projects had cut power generation to 600 mw of the total installed capacity of 2500mw in the last 24 hours due to coal shortage.

Officials said that coal was being moved to RTPP and NTTP from Singareni Collieries to ensure that the two projects would have enough stocks for the next one week. Singareni Collieries has been instructed to increase the supply of coal from the present 12,000 to 16,000 tonnes required to RTPP.

The NTTP was also provided required coal from Singareni and Mahanandi fields. Sources said that power generation had resumed in one of the two units that were shutdown on Sunday in the RTPP. Meanwhile, arrangements were also being made for the supply of coal from Mahanandi coal fields from Odisha from where coal transportation was stopped due to summer in the last two weeks. Sources said that the AP government also decided to hold talks with Coal India with regard to the allocation of coal to the thermal projects located in Andhra Pradesh as the power generation needs to be increased in view of the escalated gap between power demand and supply.
