The antenna of a coin box is attached to a long bamboo to enable the Girijan tanda people to make phone calls in Palutla village in Nallamala forest in Prakasam districtOngole: Many might have heard bamboo chicken and some might have even tasted it. But here is another bamboo first. It is bamboo phone (shall we call Bongu Phone).

Palutla is a Girijan tanda situated in the remote Nallamala forest in Yerragondapalem mandal of Prakasam district. It has a dubious distinction of once the bastion of Maoists and there were many an encounter near the village.

It is very difficult to reach the village since it situated on a hill. It is an adventure to reach the village to traverse the distance without carrying drinking water. For the last several centuries, the village has no contact with the civilisation. If anyone from the village wants to contact any person, they have to walk about 40 km to make a phone call.

Someone in the Tanda noticed that cell phones were catching faint signals at some point on the hill.

Necessity is the mother of invention. The villagers brought a coin box to the village. Since there is hardly any signal, they raised the antennae of the coin box to a higher level with the help of a bamboo. Lo behold! They got the signal.

Now they could talk to anyone using the coin box. In case of emergency, they can even contact a doctor. Bamboo phone has changed their lives.
