Kurnool/Vizianagaram: The flood situation of the Tungabhadra and Nagavali rivers took a dangerous turn on Sunday, following heavy rains upstream. People living in low-lying areas abutting the rivers had been cautioned by the Tungabhadra Board to be alert, Superintending Engineer Srinivas Rao said.

The 33 gates of Tungabhadra Dam were lifted because of heavy inflows from Saturday

After about 85,000 cusecs of water reached the Tungabhadra reservoir on Sunday, the irrigation department officials released two lakh cusecs downstream by lifting 33 crest gates.

Meanwhile, heavy inflows of two lakh cusecs from upstream reached the Sunkesula reservoir. As a precautionary measure, the Irrigation officials are releasing the flood water. A control room, with toll-free number of 1800 4254 299 has been set up at the Kurnool Collectorate to periodically review the flood situation and take remedial measures.

In Vizianagaram district, after the Nagavali flood level has substantially increased, officials lifted four crest gates and released 28,000 cusecs into the sea. The water level is steadily rising following widespread rain in Odisha.

Heavy inflows into Srisailam reservoir

Srisailam: Following heavy rain in upper reach areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra there has been heavy inflow into the Srisailam reservoir. Water from Tungabhadra and Jurala projects has been reaching the reservoir in abundance.

As against the maximum storage level of 885ft at the Srisailam Reservoir, the water level has already reached 850ft. However, the water level is going up by hour. In all 1.67 lakh cusecs of water is reaching the Srisailam reservoir. The right bank hydel project is generating 105 MW power during peak-load hours. During the last 24 hours it has generated 10,457 million watts power.
