The annual ‘Visakaha Utsav’, which was abandoned in 2006 for various reasons, would be held from January 23 to 25, announced Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao in a review meeting held at the Collectorate here on Tuesday.

Visakhapatnam: The annual ‘Visakaha Utsav’, which was abandoned in 2006 for various reasons, would be held from January 23 to 25, announced Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao in a review meeting held at the Collectorate here on Tuesday.

Mr Srinivasa Rao said the motto of the Utsav was to make Vizag a destination of international tourism. It was also decided to appoint a brand ambassador to publicise the three-day event. A well-known writer and music director would be asked to compose a theme song.

The main venues would be at Ramakrishna Beach, VUDA Park and Kailasagiri, Shilpaaramam at Madhurawada where major events would be conducted. A website regarding the festival would be launched by December 15. The minister said various committees would be formed to make the festival a grand success. The authorities decided to give wide publicity in all the major cities in India and in social media also.

Stalls would be set up on the Beach Road to attract the local people and tourists from other States. All the heritage buildings in the city would be spruced up with special lighting. The minister said that shops and hotels would be asked to give special discount to the tourists during the three-day festival. Cultural events like ‘Tappeta Gullu’, ‘Thimsa’, ‘Jalari Nrityam’ and ‘Puli Veshaalu’ would be conducted other than music and dance programmes. Free entry would be given to the visitors to the major parks and museums. A national-level beach volleyball competition would be conducted on RK Beach and cash prizes be distributed to the winners, he said.

Mr Srinivasa Rao further said special stalls would be set up to explain the traditions and customs of Vizag city and the district. As usual, a special flower show would be arranged at Kailasagiri and flowers from all corners of India would be placed in the show.

He said it was Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s idea to conduct the Utsav in a grand manner to reveal the greatness of Vizag. The Utsav was held last in 2006 and cancelled in the subsequent years.

MLAs Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy, PVGR Naidu, M Anitha, District Collector N Yuvaraj, ZP chairperson Lalam Bhavani, Joint Collector Pravin Kumar and other officials participated in the meeting.
