Setback to govt move to legalise bettings

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government faced a setback in its efforts to legalise the cock fight that take place during Sankranti festival in twin Godavari districts. As all the past efforts to ban such activity despite court orders had failed to put an end to cock fights and as it involves very high stakes involving the local and influential politicians, the government was said to have contemplated to allow them with certain conditions during Sankranti festival in January.

But a bench of the High Court on Monday directed the district administration of West Godavari to take immediate steps to prevent cockfights with betting during Sankranti festival season from January 10, 2015 to Jannuary 16 in the district. The bench is dealing with a writ plea filed by the counsel of one Narahari Jagadish Kumar, a native of West Godavari. He pointed out that these cock fights are mostly organised by anti-social elements and the same is contrary to the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960 and AP Gaming Act.

The government pleader informed the court that the police authorities are taking all possible steps to not to allow cockfights in the district. The bench recorded the submission that the police will not permit the cockfights and they will take all necessary steps to control them.
