New Year eve celebrations

Visakhapatnam: The super cyclone Hudhud that tore apart the city will now be a part of history. People have decided forget the tragedy by holding celebrations in a style to usher in New Year. While the most of the people chalked out various programmes in groups and families, the tipplers are busy gulping, ignoring that the police have deployed 1,200 personnel to curb drunk driving and other alcohol related incidents.

Finally it will be the wine sellers who will be laughing all the way to the bank. Many shops have increased the prices by at least 10 per cent and will be selling throughout the night giving a go-by to the police order. “Forget police and their threats to check drunk driving, we are expecting an increase at least by 10 per cent in sale on the New Year eve,” said a liquor dealer.

The administration has extended the timing of sales till 1 am on January 1 for the benefit of the tipplers. The city has 97 bar and restaurants and 56 retail shops spread across the city. The average sales is Rs 30 crore a month and in December the sales touch Rs 32 crore to Rs 35 crore. The Yuletide and holidays push up sales by at least 10 per cent compared to other months of the year and on December 31 alone sales increase by 15 per cent,’’ said excise superintendent P Ramachandra Rao.
