Vijayawada: Joint Transport Commissioner S A V Prasada Rao on Monday said seeding of vehicle registration numbers and driving licences with Aadhaar cards was an initiative of the State Government to ensure that the Transport Department was in touch with the owner of the vehicle to update on its default status.
Addressing media persons at the Deputy Transport Commissioner's office here, he said the department would utilise Aadhaar card info and other details, including the mobile phone of the vehicle owner, to communicate with him in future if necessary. The vehicle owners need not have any apprehensions over the seeding of registration numbers and driving licences with Aadhaar cards, he said.
According to official records, there are 76 lakh vehicles in the State. About 53 lakh vehicles have valid documents. The RTA has 20 lakh mobile phone numbers of vehicle owners.
SMS alerts will be sent to the contact number with the help of details furnished by the vehicle owner during seeding on renewal of licences and vehicle fitness certificates and more.
“For seeding purpose, we are taking the help of NSS and MEPMA volunteers who are accomplishing the task at special centres set up at fuel stations,'' Prasada Rao said.
Speaking on the total revenue of the department, he said it registered 19 per cent growth. The annual revenue of the department increased from Rs 1,106 crore in 2013 to Rs 1,314 crore in 2014. A revenue target of close to Rs 2,200 crore has been set for 2015, he said.
About High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles, Prasada Rao said they had already initiated the work on a pilot basis in Zone-I comprising Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
Due to Samaikyandhra agitation, there was a pause in the programme.
“We will re-launch the activity in a full-fledged manner within a week or 10 days. The price for high security number plates for two-wheelers is Rs 245, Rs 282 for three-wheelers and Rs 618 for four-wheelers,” he added.
