Turtle Festival concludes

Srikakulam: Additional Joint Collector P Rajnikanta Rao here on Wednesday called upon students and fishermen community to have awareness on conservation of turtles. He was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the two-day grand Turtle Festival here.

On this occasion, Mr. Rajnikanta inspected various competitions held for the students and the people from fishermen villages. He viewed the turtle walk, sculptures, rangoli contests and different dances at K. Matsyalesham village. The TREE Foundation (Trust for Environment Education, Conservation and Community Development) members, who arrived from Chennai, held a practical presentation on hatching turtle eggs for the students and villagers and on different measures for protecting turtles.

Coast Guard and Marine Police personnel brought awareness among the students on Operation Oliliya programme. They said that a coastal guard ship would be stationed on the coastal area from November to May for the conservation of turtles. As it was the season for turtles to lay eggs on the sea shore and beaches, they said that they would guard the area and would not allow boats for fishing.

The Coast Guard officials warned that strict action would be taken against the fishermen who hunt turtles. They also explained that how Marine police and Coast Guard departments would jointly take measures for the protection of turtles.

Field Publicity Officer Kondala Rao, Forest Officer Vijay Kumar, Assistant Director of Fisheries Yakub Basha, Sarpanch, MPP, MPTCs and other officials were present.
