The District Medical and Health Department officials have miserably failed to spend the abundantly available funds provided by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) of the Union government. As a result deaths of mothers and infants in the district are increasing.

Kurnool: The District Medical and Health Department officials have miserably failed to spend the abundantly available funds provided by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) of the Union government. As a result deaths of mothers and infants in the district are increasing.


It is estimated that 50 of lactating mothers and eight of 1,000 new born are dying because of this official failure and negligence. Also, hundreds of infant deaths are being recorded in the district. These figures are claimed to be increasing every year. Although funds are being spent to prevent these death there are no fruitful results. Besides, there is a danger of the funds getting lapsed, if not spent for the purpose.


Vested interests are allegedly abusing the Central funds in some areas of the district by forming committees. They are also claiming to be sharing the amounts set apart for critical sanitation works in rural areas, amid reports of politicians exerting pressure on the utilisation of funds.


Kurnool district gets Rs.20 crore as funds from the NRHM, besides Rs.2 crore as additional reserve amount. The department officials are failing to utilise these funds for better purpose, leading to severely affecting the implementation of various schemes. Consequently, the department has allegedly failed to achieve the family planning targets. The School Health Scheme has been confined to only records.


Rather strangely the doctors at the helm of affairs in the department claim that they have not been able to completely spend the NRHM funds because of hindrance by way of regulations. The Central funds are being utilised by 83 PHCs and 40 CHCs, besides the district hospital, and five medical colleges under the AP Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, for providing best health care to the people.


The Centre is making available huge funds through the NRHM for extending emergency health care facilities and sanitation facilities in rural areas and development of government hospitals.
