Tirupati: The Hans India Chief Editor Prof K Nageshwar has advocated that the State of Andhra Pradesh must be accorded the special category status given its financial and economic constraints although the State in reality does not meet the parameters necessary for securing such a status.

Hans India Editor Prof. K Nageshwar addressing a meeting in Tirupati on Sunday

Prof. Nageshwar participated as a chief guest at a conference on the need to grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh organised by the Middle Class Employees Coordination Forum (Mecof) in the temple city on Sunday.

He observed that though the State does not meet the various parameters including low population density, sizeable share of tribal population, strategic (hostile) location, low resource base etc required to be granted the special category status, the truncated State finds itself in the middle of huge revenue deficit and was facing economic constraints. Hence it should be considered for grant of the special category status by the National Development Council, which is empowered to grant the same.

This would ensure that Andhra Pradesh receives adequate support from the Centre and would be brought back on to the path of comprehensive overall development. Over 500 employees of TTD, BSNL, LIC and other wings took part in the 4th conference of the Middle Class Employees Coordination Forum.
