Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday launched the first Made in India Xiaomi ‘Redmi 2 Prime’ smartphone manufactured in Sri City in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Taking pride in being the forerunner of ‘Make In India’ concept, the Chief Minister said the AP government would encourage enthusiastic entrepreneurs who set up industries in the State.

“We have introduced single desk system to clear the files with regard to the industries and offering many incentives to the investors,” Naidu told a gathering of industrialists. The factory, in Andhra Pradesh, is a fillip for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has championed a campaign to turn India into a manufacturing powerhouse to boost economic growth and create much-needed employment.

Xiaomi partnered with Taiwan's Foxconn to set up a mobile phone manufacturing facility here as the Chinese tech major planned to grab a larger share of the booming handset market in India. The company, which started its operations in India last year, currently manufactures its devices in China and Brazil. Located in Sri City, the India unit has started assembling ‘Redmi 2 Prime' handsets and will gradually include other devices from the company's portfolio.

“This is our second local manufacturing unit outside China, the first one being in Brazil with Foxconn. We started our discussions with the government in February and we have already started with the manufacturing. That shows how keen we are on the market here and how supportive the government is of high-tech players,” Xiaomi Vice President Hugo Barra told reporters here.

“The first device being manufactured here is Redmi 2 Prime, priced at Rs 6,999 and it will go on sale across online platforms (Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon and mi.com) from Monday,” he added. The device is an enhanced version of Xiaomi's bestseller Redmi 2 and features 2GB RAM and 16GB memory. Barra, however, declined to share details of the investment, capacity or number of employees at the facility.
