TDP and BJP MPs meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at North Block in New Delhi on Tuesday

New Delhi: MPs of Andhra Pradesh, cutting across party lines, stepped up the pressure on the Centre for special status to Andhra Pradesh, both within the Parliament and outside, here on Tuesday while the desperate TDP MPs besieged the Union Ministers seeking ‘some kind of an assurance’ on it as a face saving measure.

As protests across AP increased following the death of Muni Kamakoti of Tirupati, the TDP and BJP MPs', whose activity in this context, was lukewarm all these days, tried to regain some lost ground by launching a joint campaign. Led by Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Y Sujana Chowdary, MPs of both the TDP and the BJP met the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to impress upon him the need to accord the special status to the State.

Acknowledging that there were obstacles in its way due to changed circumstances, they pleaded with the Union Minister for the status as AP's progress was interlinked with the same. Industrial development would not be possible and the Centre could not go back on the same as all its leaders had promised it, they pointed out

Later, meeting the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the TDP and BJP MPs sought implementation of the bifurcation provisions in toto. Delay in dividing the assets and liabilities and division of employees would not serve any purpose, they reportedly told him seeking his "active intervention", including the implementation of the provisions of Section 8 of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. They also sought the appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise issue.

On the other hand, Congress MPs continued raising the issue in Parliament. Its Rajya Sabha member AP, J D Seelam, made a strong pitch for the special status which was promised during bifurcation by both the TDP and the BJP.Later, speaking to the media along with K V P Ramachandra Rao, Seelam said the status was a birth right of the AP people.

The State was deprived of revenue and was starving of funds. The Status was essential for its development and growth. Lashing out at the "criminal silence’ of both the the TDP and the BJP leadership over the issue, they said the death of Muni Koti should be an eye opener to the governments.

The YSRCP MPs led P Mithun Reddy continued their dharna mode of Monday and hit back at the Centre for not keeping its word on special status. They said it was unfortunate that the TDP MPs never bothered to raise the issue despite being pleaded to do so and remaining silent in the Parliament all these days.
