Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has proposed to increase bus fares by 10 to 15 per cent to meet the revenue deficit, according to its Managing Director N Sambasiva Rao. Talking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said, “Though the RTC is facing severe financial crisis, it did not increase the bus fares in the last two years.
Instead, we asked our officials to mobilise funds internally and improve the occupancy rate in buses to augment the RTC revenue. Despite our best efforts, the RTC is not able to overcome the deficit. Hence, it has submitted a proposal to the State government seeking clearance to increase the bus fares.’’
He said the pay revision for the RTC staff put an additional financial burden of Rs 55 crore per month on the corporation. The frequent fluctuations in the price of diesel also increased its operational costs. Though the RTC earned a revenue of Rs 70 crore in July by operating special bus services for Godavari Pushkaralu, the deficit could not be met.
The RTC management held discussions with the retired officials to solicit their suggestions to augment the corporation revenue, he said. Speaking on the RTC performance, he said it did well in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The RTC earned a total revenue of Rs 4,800 crore during the last fiscal.
During a recent meeting, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu advised the RTC officials to make use of its land and other assets in a productive manner to get additional revenue. The Chief Minister’s suggestion would be implemented soon, Sambasiva Rao said. Speaking on RTC priorities, he said focus would be laid on improvement of passenger amenities and cleanliness at bus stations.
A sum of Rs 52 crore was earmarked for improvement of passenger amenities at the RTC bus stations this year, he said. RTC Executive Director A Venkateswara Rao, Regional Manager PV Rama Rao and other officials were present at the news conference.
