Rajahmundry/Eluru: The water level in river Godavari is rising due to heavy rains in its catchment areas in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh and 7.33 lakh cusecs of water is being discharged into sea from four canals of Sir Arthur Cotton barrage in Dowleswaram on Monday. But, the irrigation authorities informed that flood waters started receding as the water level was coming down at Bhadrachalam.
However, all the 175 crest gates of the barrage were kept open. At 4 pm on Monday, the gauge reading at Sir Arthur Cotton barrage was 9.3 feet and the pond level was at 13.5 feet. About 6,300 cusecs of water is being released to eastern, central and western deltas for agricultural purpose.
Meanwhile, the agency areas in the East Godavari district are badly affected due to heavy rains. Rivulets and water streams are in full rage inundating low lying areas. The situation in merged mandals of Chintur, V R Puram and Koonavaram is even worse and V R Puram mandal was cut off from Chintur mandal as Sokileru rivulet was overflowing.
40 villages remain cut off in West Godavari .The flood in Godavari river continued in West Godavari district on Monday with about 40 villages in Velerupadu Kukkunuru and Polavaram mandals being cut off from outside world. Water levels in Godavari at Polavaram, Pattiseema and Kovvuru rose and Sabari river in upstream, is overflowing.
The agency area in West Godavari district witnessed incessant rains for the last two days. Polavaram, Kukkunuru Velerupadu mandals received heavy rain fall for the consecutive second day on Monday.
Water is flowing above three feet in Godavari on Kothuru causeway in Polavaram mandal cutting off road links to villages of Tekuru, Kondrukota, Singanapalli, Koruturunand 16 more villages in the agency. In Kukkunuru and Velerupadu mandals, around 20 villages have no transport facility.
Meanwhile, rivulets in agency area, Jalleru, Yerrakalva, Byneru, are in spate with the reservoirs of Jalleru and Yerrakalva brimming with water. As Vasistha Godavari has received heavy flood water, Kanakkayalanka village having a population of 2,000 has been marooned.
In Kovvuru town, the flood water inundated the steps of Goshpada Revu completely and touched the statue of Gowthami Maharshi in this pushkara Ghat. In Yalamanchili and Narsapuram mandals also the Vasishta Godavari is in spate.
