The State government has claimed that crime rate has come down drastically in Vijayawada city, a part of Amaravati, the new capital region. Discounting the Opposition parties’ charge that Vijayawada had become hub of criminal activities, particularly in the light of scandals like contaminated ghee, spurious liquor and call money scandal, the government claimed that declining crime rate has improved law and order. Giving comparative statement of crime in the city, the State government said Vijayawada has recorded 5,735 crimes against 7,230 crimes reported in 2014. The domestic violence cases of IPC 498A have come down to 2,146 cases in 2015 against 2,808 cases registered in 2014. Even the atrocity cases too have registered a downward trend from 57 in 2014 to 40 in the current year. The statement had also shown a decline in 20 kidnap cases this year against 38 registered in the previous year.

Pick-pocketing cases have also come down from 47 to 19, followed by cheating cases that have come down to 364 against 393 in the previous year. However, the leaders of various parties have ridiculed the government’s claim on the crime. “The crime had taken a new shape and had become invisible. The mafia is spreading its wings across and is found in every sector,” said the CPI-M State secretariat member, Ch Baburao. He further said that the incidents of mafia in sand, liquor, ghee, land, money and sex are very active in the city contrary to the claims of the government.

Having made the city the seat of administration, the government had changed the definition of the crime, Baburao said and regretted that some of the elected representatives of the ruling party were involved in various crimes. He further alleged that the police were not registering complaints in the police stations. Instead, the police were settling the cases with the support of the ruling party leaders, he alleged. AP Congress general secretary M Rajeswara Rao pooh-poohed the government’s claims and cited the murder of a couple in Patamata in the broad day light two days ago. Stating that the government had made the city the temporary capital and the Chief Minister was operating from here, the Congress leader said that criminals too have started their operations from the city. “The capital activity had gone up but the police force is not strengthened. So, the police have lost control over the city and the crime is reported every day,” he said.

CPI city secretary Donepudi Shankar said that the government had made Vijayawada as the capital of crime. “The Chief Minister talks about peoples’ capital at Amaravati and had made Vijayawada the crime capital,” he said and pointed out that the spurious ghee, liquor, sex scandals have increased with the government supporting the criminals. However, ruling Telugu Desam general secretary Gottipati Ramakrishna Prasad said that the very presence of the Chief Minister in the city had brought down the crime rate. Stating that Chandrababu Naidu enjoys full control of the administration, he claimed that the police department was geared up to meet the new challenges of the capital region.
