Polavaram (West Godavari): Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president N Raghuveera Reddy alleged that the Telugu Desam government has cheated people of two Godavari districts under the guise of Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS). He alleged that no drop of water will reach Rayalaseema districts through the PLIS.

The PCC chief was addressing a public meeting at Ambedkar Centre in Polavaram village in West Godavari district on Tuesday. The meeting was arranged as part of Congress Matti Satyagraha.

Speaking at the meeting, Raghuveera Reddy alleged that the PLIS was constructed to supply water to Amaravati capital region only. He said Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had stated that PLIS was part of Polavaram project. Now the Polavaram project works were at a tardy pace. He said another lift Irrigation scheme was on cards to divert Godavari water to Visakhapatnam.

He pointed out that the then Congress government had declared Polavaram as national project and the present BJP-led NDA government had sanctioned only Rs 100 crore to the project. He criticised that the BJP government was maintaining double standards while dealing with Andhra Pradesh issues.

The Congress state chief alleged that the TDP government in the state had sent proposals for funds with excessive amount for construction of Polavaram project. The state government had quoted Rs 32,000 crore for Polavaram project construction as against the original estimate of Rs 16,000 crore. The TDP leaders were trying to loot the state under the name of Irrigation projects. He demanded the Centre to accord special status to Andhra Pradesh immediately. He said the Congress would send the gravel gathered from various parts of the state to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to highlight the issue.

Former ministers Kanumuri Bapiraju, Vatti Vasantha Kumar, MM Pallamraju and others participated in the meeting. Earlier, Raghuveera Reddy gathered gravel from Polavaram village.
