Nellore: Finally, underground drainage system will become reality in the city. Thanks to the torrential rains and the floods in the city that inundated many residential colonies in the newly developed areas. Now, the State government has realised the need of the project for clearing waste/flood water during calamities. The State government has sanctioned underground drainage project at a cost of Rs 508 crore which would be taken up with the financial assistance from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO). The Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) has to bear its share of Rs 60 crore in the project.

“This has been aimed to ensure proper removal of sewage and domestic waste in the city at various localities and also for improving water flow in Sarvepalli Canal which has been in a damaged condition. Once the project is completed then several low-lying localities in city would not face flood threat in future,” said the NMC official.

It may be recalled that the HUDCO had granted Rs 1,100 crore for the underground drainage system and comprehensive water supply scheme for the city in the first quarter of this year. The Municipal Administration department has not taken any initiative to utilise the loan since the rate of interest would be around 14 per cent and it becomes a huge burden on the NMC which has already been facing fund crunch for continuing the existing works.

But, the State government has approached the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) that provides loan at 0.5 per cent interest. Senior officials of the Municipal Administration department have decided to avail the HUDCO loan immediately which would be cleared as soon as the JICA grants loan.
