On average, 2 road deaths a day in West Godavari

Failure of law and order, fatal accidents, suicides and kidnaps were recorded during the year 2015 in West Godavari district. The year witnessed 1,703 road accidents at an average of three accidents per day. In these accidents, about 673 people lost their lives at an average of 2 per day. About 2,208 people received either serious or simple injuries in these accidents. During 2014, the death rate was 661.

The year witnessed 1,703 road accidents at an average of three accidents per day. In these accidents, about 673 people lost their lives at an average of 2 per day. About 2,208 people received either serious or simple injuries in these accidents. During 2014, the death rate was 661.

In the year 2015, most of the accidents took place in the morning time. A TV news presenter Badri and his son were killed when his car hit a roadside tree near Lakshminagar in Marampalli Panchayat of Dwaraka Tirumala mandal in February. Later in the year, during Godavari Maha Pushkarams, 30 road accidents were registered in which 19 people were dead.

A total of 356 people committed suicides as compared to 447 suicide deaths previous year. About 10 farmers committed suicide unable to bear financial pressures and losses in the cultivation. Among the suicide cases recorded during the year, Krupamani case hit the headlines. Veldurti Krupamani (21), a resident of Velpuru, committed suicide on October 24, because of torture and harassment by her parents and Gudala Srinivas, a rowdy Sheeter in Peravali Police station records. After one month of her suicide only, the police managed nabbed the culprits including the main accused Srinivas. The Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, had to intervene and direct the police to immediately take action in the case. Subsequently, her parents and brother were arrested. They were managed to arrest the main accused, Srinivas, on November 28.

As many as 199 rape cases were recorded in the district. Out of this, 88 victims are minor girls. A 7-year-old girl, Tiyyala Lavanya, was raped and killed by Ganiganti Suresh, a habitual offender on June 16 in Madepalli village. The villagers found the girl’s body in folding position in a trunk box.
