Tirupati: Even as the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) trying to bring down the felling of the trees in Seshachalam forests, the smugglers were able to sneak into it making their presence felt often. On Thursday, the movement of the smugglers was found in three places by the RSASTF–one in Tirumala and two- down the hills Tirupati. The RSASTF parties combing the areas could only seize 7 red sanders logs in Mangalam forest area and were on the hunt to track down the smugglers.

A group of woodcutters, who were climbing down the hills, carrying red sanders logs on their heads came face-to-face with the combing party in Mangalam area, around midnight. The smugglers attacked the task force personnel with stones. In return, task force men opened fire in the air after warning them. One woodcutter from Tamil Nadu was nabbed while others escaped into deep forests, leaving logs behind. In Zoo Park area, the combing party chased the smugglers moving in a group into the forest in the early hours of Thursday but they managed to escape.

In the search, task force personnel recovered axes, knives used to fell trees .The search is on in the forest area when reports last came in. In Tirumala, the combing party found bags of rice, pulses and other provisions in the forest near Parvetamantapam in Tirumala. It is believed that the smugglers camping in the forest, readying for cooking and went away after sensing the presence of combing party.
