Hyderabad: The State government has decided to outsource survey and settlement task of government and few other categories of lands in the State to private survey companies.

The decision comes in wake of increasing number of cases where people show up with ‘documents’ and claiming ownership of particular lands while the government records indicate otherwise – with no ownership.

According to sources in the Commissionerate of Survey and Settlement of Land Records, the Survey and Settlement Record (SSR) was prepared about hundred years ago and there was no updating on a regular basis.

Consequently, though lands have changed several hands the ‘archaic’ SSR indicates several tracts of land as having no ownership. In the recent times several of them claiming ownerships, with valid documents, have dragged the government to the courts, leaving the latter high and dry.

This being the case the government has come to conclusion to order fresh survey pertaining to all government lands, dotted lands, Inam lands deploying modern technology. As per the details available, so far 15 companies have come forward to carry out the SSR work of enumerating and recording the land details in the State.

Most of these companies are based out of Delhi, Gujarat, and Bangalore. It is learnt that these companies have carried out similar exercises in other states.
When asked about the same, Revenue department principal secretary J C Sharma informed that the survey of private lands was already taken up during the Mee Intiki – Mee Bhoomi programme. He said the government had achieved 90 per cent success on the front.

Besides, the government had already introduced Electronic Total Station (ETS) machines to carry out the survey and to speed up the process of settling claims on lands. But, on the other hand, it feels there is a strong need to re-survey and settle the government lands and dotted lands, he added.

The official informed that they would take around a month or two to zero in on a private company to commission the work. He said it would take around two years to complete the task across the State.

The official also said that the government is also mulling to carry out a joint survey and inspection of endowment lands in the State.
