Eluru: The big fight has begun. No orders and no warnings stopped the rooster fight in West Godavari. All the villages are in fighting spree. MLAs, ruling Telugu Desam Party leaders indulged directly in the cockfight defying the High Court directions. Even police are on duty at the rings arranged for the fight; they could not stop the fight, leaving the innocent creature to its fate. About 400 rings were started for the cockfight in the district on Bhogi festival day on Thursday. Besides the rooster-fight, allied activities like dice game (gundata) and playing cards also started in various places. The liquor sale has started at the venues of the cockfight.

Telugu Desam legislators Chintamaneni Prabhakar (Denduuru), Unguturu MLA Ganni Veeranjaneyulu, Undi MLA Vetukuri Sivaramaraju (Kalavapudi Siva) directly participated in the cockfights in their respective areas. The cockfights, which were banned by High Court recently, have started in almost all the areas in West Godavari district on Thursday. The MLAs led the cockfights at their respective areas. In Kovvuru division alone, it was estimated 284 rings were arranged and fight was conducted on Thursday.

In Kovvuru town, Municipal Chairman Surapaneni Chinna participated in the rooster fight arranged in the area. Teugu Rytu State organising secretary Jonnalagadda Chowdary participated in the fight at Malakapalli village in Tallapudi mandal and also at Kovvuru for just a few minutes. In Gopalapuram, MLA Muppidi Venkatswara Rao participated in the cockfight. In Buttayagudem, the MLA Modium Srinivasa Rao attended the fight.

The Government Whip Chintamaneni Prabhakar participated in cockfight at Koppaka village. He started the fight in the village with festive fervour. In Unguturu, MLA Ganni Veeranjaneyulu participated with the rooster in the fray at Gundugolanu village.

In Chintalapudi and Jangareddigudem areas also the cockfight started in the morning. In Jangareddigudem mandal, the fight was conducted in Jangareddigudem, Srinivasapuram, Nagulagudem and Perampeta villages. Even the police were present at the fight. No action was initiated to stop the cockfights even though court orders to stop the fight. The fight is going on in Ganapavaram and Nidamarru mandas. Pedanindrakolanu, Bhuvvanapalli and Nidamarru villages have witnessed the cockfight.

It is estimated that about 400 rings were started in delta, upland and Agency areas of the district on first day of three-day Pongal festival. In delta area, the fight has been started at Bhimavaram, Bhimavaram rural, Akiveedu, Undi mandals. Undi MLA Vetukuri Sivaramaraju participated in Mahadevipatnam ring. In Tanuku mandal’s Tetali village, cockfight was started by village sarpanch Kota Nageswara Rao. The police became mute spectators to the rooster fight in the district.
