Yanam: The wholesale hygienic fish market, constructed at a cost of Rs 1 crore, at Savitri Nagar in Yanam is yet to become operational even three years after it was inaugurated by Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasami in January 2013.

The hygienic fish market and the adjacent dry fish platforms in two acres area were constructed with National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) funds.

The project was conceived to provide high-end marketing facilities to fisherfolk in hygienic surroundings, by having drying platforms in place among others, to ensure that the sea produce remains fresh before it is disposed off for consumption.

Once operational, the project is expected to benefit about 20,000 fishermen families in Giriyam Peta, Savitri Nagar, and adjoining areas by helping them get remunerative price.

Besides, there is enough mechanism to segregate varieties of fishes to help retailers to choose easily.

When asked about the delay in making the project functional, Yanam Municipal Commissioner L Rama Rao said it was due to theft of fans and electrical equipment by some robbers and the damage caused to the interior decoration.

He also said that they were still awaiting the release of Rs 20 lakh funds from NFDB to meet the construction expenses which they had spent on behalf of the NFDB.

He also informed that a decision was already taken to hand over the maintenance of the fish market to fishermen cooperative society.
