Tirupati: The explosion of a firecracker with a deafening sound and subsequently thick white smoke enveloping the area near Annarao circle in the city on Wednesday triggered panic in the locality. The bursting of the firecracker which was believed to be a crudely made one by a clandestine manufacturer engaged in illegal production of firecrackers, in the morning at about 7 when there was no hustle and bustle on the arterial KT road, shocked a few people, including the morning walkers, near the site.

Some of the people residing near the site were rattled after the firecracker burst with a thundering noise and emitted white smoke, informed the Alipiri police who immediately arrived at the spot along with bomb disposal squad. They cordoned off the area of the explosion which took place on a bridge on the road, leading to Kapilatheertham and also gathered the left out materials after the burst.

Tirupati East DSP KV Murali Kirshna who inspected the spot, said that preliminary examination of the evidences gathered and enquiries with some of the eye witnesses indicated that it was a pyrotechnic explosion. “It was the burst of an abeyant firecracker left in the area by some persons, due to some stimulation like pressure or heat,’’ he said and added that no remnants or materials like splinters which will be normally found after explosion of explosive like bombs were found in the area.

The materials collected from the site will be sent for testing in a laboratory to find out the exact object which exploded. The DSP said that they will also examine the video-footage of the CC camera at Annarao circle, which is 100 metres away from the bridge where the blast took place, to secure clues on the incident.

Another police officer also observed that it was a pyrotechnic explosion as there was no evidence of any materials which are normally found after the bomb explosion including detonators, shockwaves and timers used to trigger explosion. However, as part of precautionary measures, the police took up searches in all the transit points in the city to rule out the existence of any explosives anywhere in the city. The incident which spread like wildfire drew good crowd to the area and also created flutter in the town.
