Tirupati: Former Congress MP Chintha Mohan took up again a signature campaign here on Wednesday, this time to press management of the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) to provide free treatment to all in its super-specialty hospital here.

The signature campaign which was held on the busy road leading to SVIMS received a good response from various sections of people including women, students and even from the SVIMS employees. They supported the demand of free treatment in SVIMS for the benefit of the poor and middle class.

Speaking on the occasion, the Congress leader said the government hospitals at Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Kurnool and Hyderabad providing super-specialty treatment free of cost for heart, kidney and brain ailments which involves huge cost.

But, in the pilgrim city where Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia Government General Hospital (SVRRGGH) which is the referral hospital there is no such free facility for treatment to these diseases affecting the poor and middle class.

After SVIMS came into existence, the cardiology, urology and neurology departments in SVRRGGH became nominal due to funds crunch, leaving the poor depending on SVIMS for treatment, he explained while stressing the government to extending free treatment in SVIMS also on par with government hospitals.

The Congress leader also slammed the TDP government for handing over the newly constructed Institute for obstetrics with Rs 77 crore to SVIMS. He found fault with the State government for not taking up construction works for the cancer hospital for which foundation stone was already laid and funds were also allocated during the previous UPA government.

Later, Mohan submitted a memorandum and signatures collected from the people to SVIMS in-charge Director Sivakumar. He praised the services of the doctors at Ruia, BIRRD and SVIMS and added that extending free treatment in SVIMS will go a long way in making super-specialty treatment within the reach of common poor and middle class. Sivakumar assured to look into the demand. Congress leaders Satyavanthudu, Sridevi, Prabhakar and others were present.
