Every month, the DMHO would give the particulars of institutional deliveries to District Mahila Samakya, which procures  material from the suppliers. After packing, these kits would be sent to Mandal Mahila Samakya village organizations for distribution to the lactating women in that particular village.

Rajahmundry: The District Administration, East Godavari, has initiated a novel scheme named Anna Deevena (bother’s blessings) to meet the health needs of lactating women.

H Arun Kumar, District Collector who worked as CEO, Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) earlier, took this initiation by pooling the available resources through corporate social responsibility (CSR) and to match the services of Self-Help Groups in implementing this scheme in the district.

Hectic consultations with experts on nutritional food, physicians and the elder women to know the immediate health needs of lactating women form part of the exercise. Post-delivery care and list of commodities, material for protection of mother and child, careful selection of food like jaggery, red millets flour, gingili oil, Horlicks and material like muffler, cap and mosquito net also part of the effort. All these essential things are being supplied to the lactating mothers in a kit. The bag of goods carries the name, Anna Deevena.

Support from Reliance Industries and ONGC to extend their cooperation for this social cause under CSR was also materialized for successful implementation of this scheme in the district.

An apex body consisting of Self-Help Groups and District Mahila Samakhya has also finalized the proposals of the district administration to supply these kits. The body worked out, after through discussions, on extending support to procurement, packing and supply of these kits at village-level.

Necessary steps were also taken for procurement of commodities, their packing under hygienic conditions and transportation in the district. This scheme was launched in the district in September. As many as 8,225 women were covered with an expenditure of Rs 64 lakh so far. Free supply of each kit would cost Rs 778 which includes packing and transportation charges.

Explaining about the scheme implementation, Collector Arun Kumar said that this scheme resulted in improving institutional deliveries in the district and also in reducing IMR and MMR rate. This scheme was meant for promoting deliveries in the government hospitals keeping in view of the safety of mother and child. The SHG women are also paying a vital role in its implementation. This scheme would continue to improve the health conditions of lactating women.
