Vijayawada: “An important reason for public mistrust of science is that ordinary people feel, they will sometimes end up being the ones to suffer the cost of technological innovations,” said Dr Kirpal Singh Chugh, known as the Father of Nephrology in India.
Dr Chugh who is working as Emeritus Professor of Nephrology at PGIMER, Chandigarh, addressing the gathering on ‘Science, Medicine and Society’ at the Dr NTRUHS convocation shared his experiences of life and career. He tried to impose knowledge and provoke thought among the listeners by describing his five lessons of life, sensibly. During his speech, Dr Chugh said, “Lot of research being carried out in our country is going waste because we are trying to mimic the western scientists and are only duplicating the work being done outside.”
In his lessons of life which he shared with the gathering, Chugh spoke about the importance of dreaming. “Dream so big and do not cease from imagining things that make you a better person to achieve your aims,” he said. The second lesson he shared of was to build a character and self-confidence. The importance of humility and gratefulness was described as his third lesson while, his fourth lesson was to impart students to earn by only honest means.
He finally asked the students to embrace honesty, openness of dialogue and accountability, combined with tolerance and acceptance of opposing points of view.
He asked the young graduates to oblige by society. “Whichever field you choose in your professional career, your aim should be the welfare of your society.”
