According to sources, of the total 24,340 houses in the district, 4,600 houses were sanctioned for Kakinada and 4,200 houses for Rajamahendravaram. The remaining houses were sanctioned for seven municipalities-Tuna, Peddapuram, Pithapuram, Samarlakota, Ramachandrapuram, Mandapeta and Amalapuram.
It was learnt that the cost of a two-bed room flat in 400 sq ft area was fixed at Rs 5.50 lakh. Of the total amount, the State and Central governments will release Rs 3 lakh for the beneficiaries, Rs 10,000 should be borne by the beneficiary and the balance amount would be offered by banks.
East Godavari housing district manager D Selvaraj said the government had introduced the scheme to provide concrete housing to the poor. “The process of identifying the beneficiaries for the scheme is being carried out in the district. A number of teams have been formed to conduct the survey and identify the beneficiaries,” he added. He said geo-tagging process is being taken up to detect irregularities in housing.
BJP district president Y Malakondaiah expressed concern over the dominance of Janmabhoomi committees in the selection of beneficiaries. He sought transparency in beneficiaries’ list for the benefit of the deserving people. TDP State general secretary Yerra Venugopal Rayudu termed the BJP objectionable. He said the administration cannot be run at the whims and fancies of BJP leaders.
When contacted East Godavari lead bank district manager S Jagannadha Swamy said that they have asked bankers to cooperate with the district administration for the successful implementation of the Housing Scheme. He said that the Centre and all the State governments are working together to ensure that five crore houses are built by 2022 for the poor in the country.
He said “Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in urban areas, the allocation will be based on the number of urban poor and slum dwellers. The ‘Housing for All’ mission is being implemented in all the 4,041 statutory cities/towns in the country.” He said that there was no truth in multiple houses being sanctioned to single beneficiary and the genuine beneficiaries did not get the houses.
