Fire department gears up for summer

Vijayawada: Krishna district disaster response and fire services department is gearing up to face challenges in summer. Due to scorching heat and other reasons, fire accidents take place mostly in summer. The fire services department attended 335 serious fire accidents, 1,126 medium fire accidents and 13,439 small fire accidents in the district since 2009.

The department also attended 731 rescue and emergency cases in the district since 2009. The department staff attends both fire accidents and other rescue and emergency operations, which are not connected to the fire. The department staff attended 15,631 fire calls and rescue and emergency operations during the last seven years.

The department has offices in 22 mandals including Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Nuzvid, Machilipatnam, Jaggaiahpet, Gudivada towns and other mandal headquarters of the district. Fire tenders located in these offices rush to the accident spots and take part in the rescue operations. Saving the property and lives of people during the disasters is not an easy job.

Due to heavy wind and high temperatures in the summer, the property is gutted in the mishaps within minutes on some occasions. The department personnel don’t have time to reach the destinations on many occasions. A total of 47 persons lost their lives in the fire accidents since 2009 in the district. The department saved lives of 79 persons in the district during the last seven years.

Keeping in view of the emergency needs, the department has repaired all the fire tenders and gearing up to meet the challenges. Staff working in the disaster response and fire services is not only attend the fire accidents but also other disasters in the district. The rescue operations include saving lives of people jumping into Krishna river, canals, wells, or other mishaps.

During the road accidents also the fire services personnel take active part to save the lives of people. However, luckily, no major fire disasters broke out in the factories or residential and commercial buildings in the district in recent years. People are also getting aware of the fire disasters and installing equipment to meet the emergency needs.

Last year, five serious accidents, 11 medium accidents and 590 small fire accidents broke out in the district. Total number of fire accidents in 2015 was only 606. A total of 2112 fire accidents broke out in 2014. Assistant district fire officer V Srinivas Reddy told ‘The Hans India’ all fire tenders in the district got repaired to meet the summer challenges.

He said the Government allocates budget every summer to repair the vehicles. He said the department has 22 fire tenders and out of which three were outdated. He said proposals have been made to replace them with new vehicles. Of the total 15,631 calls attended by the staff in the district from 2009 to 2015, the number of serious fire accidents was only 335 and medium fire accidents was 1,126.

Both serious and medium fire accidents constitute less than 10 per cent of the total accidents. Fortunately, no major disaster occurred in the district in recent years.
