New Delhi: Congress MP in Rajya Sabha K V P Ramachandra Rao on Saturday shot off a letter to Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu asking him to support the private members bill on special status to Andhra Pradesh that would come up in the Upper House on May 15 for discussion and voting.

Rao and TPCC leaders, who held consultations with the AICC general secretary in-charge of AP and Telangana Digvijay Singh, sent the letter in which he said that when no MP or Minister from Seemandhra region had supported the bill to bifurcate the state, Venkaiah Naidu who represents Karnataka in Rajya Sabha moved several amendments to the bill and had put up several demands to help the Seemandhra people after bifurcation of the state.

He said people of Seemandhra had seen him as the only saviour in Rajya Sabha on that day and that Venkaiah Naidu had earned a special place in the hearts of the people of the state which also helped the TDP-BJP combine to win the elections.

He recalled how Venkaiah Naidu demanded that the Centre help the state in bridging the revenue deficit for ten years. He said Naidu had also demanded that during the first year, the Centre should allocate Rs 10,000crore from the consolidated fund. He said it was Naidu who made forceful demand for special status for AP.

Reminding Naidu that he had even said that the BJP would come to power and it would fulfill all the promises made by the UPA government.

But in shocking development, he and the central government claims that special status was not possible since it was not part of the Act. This, he said, was unfortunate. Neither the Union Minister nor the Prime Minister had stated this during elections.

In the backdrop of this situation, he said as a former BJP national president and close confident of the Prime Minister he should use his good offices and ensure that justice was done to the people of the state.

Rao urged him to use his influence with the NDA partners and see that they vote in support of the private members bill moved by him on May 15.
