Vijayawada: The CPM city unit staged a dharna in front of the CRDA office here on Wednesday, protesting against the arrest of CPM leaders at Velagapudi in Guntur district when the leaders went to meet the contract workers taking part in construction of temporary secretariat. The CPM city secretary, Donepudi Kasinath, speaking on the occasion, said it was undemocratic to arrest the CPM leaders at Velagapudi as they went to meet the workers and see the working conditions at Velagapudi.
He said two construction workers lost their lives due to the negligence of the Government and contractor.
He alleged that the Government had failed to provide basic amenities and take protective measures for the safety of construction workers. Kasinath alleged that the police had behaved rudely with the Left leaders who went to meet the construction workers and demanded the immediate release the party State secretariat committee member Ch Baburao and other detained leaders.
