- Federation of Farmers fears the State would go dry, if Telangana projects are allowed
- Alleges that the projects are against water allocation by Bachawat and Brajesh Kumar tribunals
Vijayawada: Chairman of The Federation of Farmers Yerneni Nagendranath asked the State government to take an all party delegation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop Telangana government’s unauthorised irrigation projects on Krishna and Godavari rivers.
Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Nagendranath feared the State would go dry, if those projects are completed. He alleged that the Telangana government had taken up several projects on both the rivers against the water allocation to the State by the Bachawat and Brajesh Kumar tribunals. He wanted to know, why the State government was not acting tough to stop these projects.
The farmer leader demanded the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to convene an all party meeting including the representatives of the farmers and farmers’ organisations to discuss the projects. “The government should lead the delegation to the Prime Minister to mount pressure on the Telangana government to stop these projects,” he said.
Nagendranath said that the Telangana government was drawing 19 tmcft of water from Nagarjuna Sagar as against the actual allocation of 1.6 tmcft, to meet the drinking water demands of Hyderabad. “However, there was no drinking water allocation for Amaravati, the new capital,” he said and demanded the State government to take up the issue with the Central Water Commission, river water tribunals and the Central government.
The farmer leader also wanted the government to take up alternative measures to protect the irrigation and drinking water requirements of the State. He advised construction of barrages across Muneru and Paleru rivulets and Pulichintala Reservoir. He also suggested that the government take up construction of a minimum of three barrages in the upstream and three more in the downstream of Prakasam Barrage to save flood water in Krishna river.
