Vijayawada: Minister for Water Resources Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao alleged on Tuesday that the Telangana government was not respecting the agreement it had reached with the Andhra Pradesh and Central government during the bifurcation of the State on sharing of Krishna waters and not releasing waters to AP as directed by the Krishna River Waters Management Board (KRWMB).

The Minister, while speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, said that the AP government has asked the Centre about the jurisdiction of the KRWMB so that the State gets its share of Krishna waters. He further said that the TRS leaders were unnecessarily raising the issues with the Centre.

Recalling that the KRWMB recently instructed the Telangana government to release 4 tmc ft of water to cater the drinking water needs of AP, Uma Maheswara Rao said that the KCR government had released only 1.2 tmc ft of water and stopped later. Asking the reasons behind this, he said that the KRWMB also asked the KCR government to release 2 tmc ft of water from Sagar but there was no response.

As per the agreement, engineers of the Telangana will supervise the water levels and release at Sagar and Andhra engineers will monitor the water at Srisailam. Though the waters are released at Srisailam, the TS government is not releasing water to AP, he added.

Uma Maheswara Rao reiterated that AP must know the jurisdiction of the KRWMB and the State government is trying to do that. Disputes on water sharing among Karnakata, Maharashtra, AP and TS are under the purview of the Supreme Court and the issues will be resolved later.

As per Section 89 of the AP Reorganisation Act, the KRWMB jurisdiction is to be notified by the Centre over water works, part of the canal network and transmission lines necessary to deliver water or power to the states.
