Tension at Gollaprolu as Kapus block highway

Pithapuram (East Godavari): Tension prevailed at Gollaprolu for more than five hours on Sunday when Kapu community members staged a `Rasta Roko’ at the tahsildar office on the National Highway 216 demanding BC status.
Consequently, vehicular traffic on the highway came to a grinding halt. They raised slogans against the TDP government and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for attempting to create a rift in the community to suppress the agitation for inclusion of the caste in BC list.
On hearing the news, a police force, led by Circle Inspector Md Umar, rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the agitators using force.
This led to heated arguments between the police and agitators. A tussle between the police and agitators ensued when the former tried to remove the latter from the place to bring the situation under control. The police bundled several agitators into vans and shifted them to Pithapuram rural and Kothapalli police stations.
Denouncing the arrests and the police `highhandedness’, Kapu community members who thronged the place in large numbers from nearby villages, took out a rally to the MPDO office and staged a demonstration. Additional police force was sent to Gollaprolu from Pithapuram to restore normalcy. About 50 Kapu activists were arrested.
Former MLA Pendem Dorababu was taken into police custody.
Kapu community members also staged a `Rasta Roko’ at B Prathipadu village to press their demand for BC status. Holding empty plates and glasses, women held a rally at Durgada village in support of the indefinite fast of former Minister Mudragada Padmanabham who is demanding withdrawal of cases registered against the community members in connection with Tuni violence.
