Payakaraopet (Visakhapatnam): In all, 58 persons, who were involved in vandalism at Palmanpet village in the mandal on Tuesday, were arrested and search operation is going on to nab the remaining who are at large.

Nearly 40 persons, including fisher women suffered injuries, when a mob from neighbouring villages attacked them following an old enmity. Bikes and house-hold articles were destroyed when the mob ransacked the houses in the village. According to police, the injured were recovering and many of them were discharged.

Kottakota Inspector Malleswara Rao, Yelamanchili Inspector K Venkata Rao, Nakkapalli Inspector Rambabu, Sub-Inspectors, Home Guards led by Narsipatnam ASP Iaishwarya Rastogi keeping tabs on the village apart from that six police pickets were deplyed.

Four Armed Reserve platoons were summoned on Wednesday from the city to nab the accused. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of IPC are in force in Palmanpet village and the situation is under control. The revenue team is still assessing the property damage.

Meanwhile, a team of YSR Congress Party leaders comprising local MPP A Siva Kumar, ZPTC member Ch Rama Rao, sarpanch D Babu Rao and others led by party Payakaraopet Assembly segment in-charge V Rama Krishna visited the affected village and consoled the victims.

They blamed local SI Satyanarayana for not taking precautionary measures prior to the violence. The leaders demanded the higher authorities to suspend SI and take stringent action against the culprits. Another team of CPI leaders led by Prabhakara Rao, Arjuna Rao and others visited the village and demanded the government to provide compensation for property loss and help the fisherfolk as they have lost their livelihood following the incident.
