Tirupati: Following the clashes between TDP and YSRCP activists, tension prevailed in Nagari town, 55 km from here on Sunday.
It all started with TDP activists trying to prevent municipal chairperson K Shanthi belonging to YSRCP from attending a function held in a ward for distribution of Ramzan Tohfa.

TDP senior leader and MLC G Muddukrishnama Naidu along with party leaders attended and distributed the Ramzan Tohfa to the members of Muslim minority on the occasion of Ramzan festival. With the arrival of Shanthi, TDP activists began shouting slogans demanding her to leave the place.

The sloganeering soon turned into heated altercation between TDP and YSRCP supporters, jostling each other and vitiating the atmosphere.

Sensing trouble, the municipal chairperson directly headed to police station to lodge a complaint against TDP workers. Even as she was waiting at the police station, along with few women councillors, a group of TDP activists descended on the scene and allegedly attacked her. One of them allegedly kicked Shanthi causing injuries.

Police intervened and tried to bring some semblance of order, separating YSRCP and TDP activists. Shanthi was first admitted in Nagari government hospital where the doctors referred her to SVRR Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, YSRCP leaders including Punganur MLA P Ramachandra Reddy strongly condemned the attack on Shanthi. He alleged that TDP activists in Nagari were acting as street rowdies and indulging in attacks against the Opposition.
