Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) here on Friday appealed to Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to press for Special Category Status to the State.

APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy wrote letters to Venkaiah Naidu and Chandrababu Naidu requesting them to take up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the National Development Council (NDC) is scheduled to meet in New Delhi on July 16.

Raghuveera Reddy recalled that the UPA government on March 1, 2014, had written to the Planning Commission to extend Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation. He also recalled that the BJP had promised during the elections to extend the Special Category Status for 10 years.

He sought to remind Venkaiah Naidu of his demand for extension of Special Category Status for 10 years during the debate on the AP Reorganisation Bill in Rajya Sabha.

However, after coming to power, the BJP had gone back on the promise, he said and asked the Central Minister to take up the issue at least now. He recalled the statement of Venkaiah Naidu that Special Category Status for the State would require the approval of all Chief Ministers and said that NDC meeting was the right opportunity for the BJP to get their approval.

He wanted the Central government to table the special category issue at the NDC meeting and get the clearance from the Chief Ministers who would be attending the meeting.

The Congress leader sought to remind Chandrababu Naidu of his initiative to get the Andhra Pradesh Assembly pass resolution seeking Special Category Status. He said Chandrababu Naidu was also part of the BJP’s coalition government and asked the Chief Minister to take up the issue with the Prime Minister at the NDC meeting.

He asked both the TDP and the BJP leaders to prove their love for the people of Andhra Pradesh by taking up the issue at the NDC meeting and securing the approval of all the Chief Ministers.
