On Energy Saving Mode

  • Advises institutions to go for roof top solar panels
  • Says replacing conventional tube lights with LED bulbs and T5 tubes will bring down power consumption by 50 per cent

Anantapur: In a bid to bring down power consumption, the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) is advising government offices as well as private institutions to go for solar power.

They are calling for replacing conventional system of lighting with solar powered LED bulbs and T5 tube lights to save energy. The officials believe that the move would bring down power consumption by 50 per cent.

This initiative is in place in a few institutions in the district. The Government General Hospital (GGH) is saving 125 units per day as they have installed two solar-powered hot water systems (500 litres and 200 litres) apart from replacing old tube lights with T5 tube lights.

NREDCAP officials also advised the GGH, which was paying Rs 12 lakh every month towards power bill to switch to roof top solar power. Even though the hospital has enough space to install solar panels, the cash-strapped institute is looking to the government for funds.

The NREDCAP officials are advising government offices to go solar to save energy. They are asking the district collector to go for solar power as it will send right message to others to follow suit. The Collectorate is consuming 16,000 units per month and is paying a power bill of Rs1.40 lakh a month.

Meanwhile, a few private engineering colleges have installed roof top solar panels in a bid to bring down power consumption to zero. Several NGO's are suggesting the government to install solar-powered agriculture pump sets free of cost for the farmers, in place of the free power supply. They say it is a one-time investment.

Echoing the same Jabez David, an educated farmer from Kotanka village says that crores of rupees on free power can be saved by making a one-time investment on supplying solar-powered pump sets.

Speaking to The Hans India, NREDCAP district manager Kodandarama Murthy said that the department was planning to create awareness on roof top solar power panels. “We are looking to motivate residential associations, so that they can take the lead. Role of NGO’s and residential associations is crucial for the awareness campaign to be successful,” he added.
