Tirupati: The rescued calves from Punganur were brought in trucks to Tirupati and were sheltered in the TTD Goshala here on Wednesday. As many as 70 calves which were taken clandestinely in a truck were left behind in Punganur, after police intercepted the truck for inspection, on Tuesday.

The miscreants were ferrying the 70 calves which were ranging from just-born to two months in the truck to slaughter. After seeing the police, they fled away leaving the vehicle along with the calves behind, fearing police action. Police first took them to Punganur police station. Later, they were taken to the dairy farm in Palamaner with the intervention of local BJP and VHP activists. But, the authorities expressed their inability to take the calves as they were no facilities for them, leading to the BJP activists contacting party State spokesperson and TTD Trust Board member G Bhanuprakash Reddy.

Bhanuprakash spoke to the TTD authorities including TTD Goshala superintendent Haranatha Reddy, who agreed to take the rescued calves upon which they were brought here to the Goshala.

Meanwhile, two calves died enroute unable to withstand the ordeal of long travel coupled with no proper care, while some were taken up by the farmers with the permission of Punganur Tahsildar leaving 52 which were admitted in TTD Goshala on Wednesday. Haranatha Reddy said that they were examining all the rescued calves brought to Goshla, for providing required treatment as many of them were not in a good health.
