Visakhapatnam: Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Dr T Subbarami Reddy appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release Rs 5,000 crore every year towards the completion of Polavaram project.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the MP said that the Central government has an obligation for the completion of the project as per the Section 90 (2) of the AP Reorganisation Act 2014.

“If the project is to be completed in time, every year the Central government has to earmark a minimum of Rs 5,000 crore as the project cost has been escalated to Rs 16,000 crore,” he said.

He lamented that the Centre had only disbursed Rs 850 crore while the State government had spent Rs 1,804 crore till June. He recalled that the State Irrigation Minister had also placed a requisition with the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to allot Rs 3,035 crore in the supplementary budget in this fiscal.

As per the Section 46(3) of the Act, the Centre has to grant adequate incentives in the form of special development package to the backward districts of AP, but till now the Centre has not given any direction providing incentives, he said.

As per the Section 94(3) of the Act, the Centre has to give financial support for creating essential facilities at the new capital of AP and a very megre amount has been disbursed.

He sought Prime Minister’s personal intervention in releasing necessary budgets for Polavaram budget, incentives for backward districts of AP and for constructing High Court building and other facilities at the new capital of AP.
