Visakhapatnam: The district administration has imposed restrictions on Ganesh puja rallies and immersions in view of BRICS meeting being hosted by the city from September 14 to September 16.

Announcing the measures, Collector Praveeen Kumar in a joint press briefing with Commissioner of Police T Yoganand here on Saturday said immersion of Ganesh idols in the stretch from Naval Coastal Battery to the Park Hotel junction has been completely banned due to the recent sand erosion and to avoid environmental pollution.

Praveen Kumar said that they would be also restricting the stretch from Coastal Battery till Kailasagiri from September 12 to September 16 for immersion of the idols in the view of BRICS conference and other government programmes.

He said that there would be official government programmes at Kailasagiri Hill, Park Hotel and Novotel Hotel from September 12 to September 16 as a result there will be heavy VIP movement in the stretch from Naval Coastal Battery to Kailsagiri Hill road.

He said that they have identified two areas-fishing harbour and the Peda Waltair Beach for Ganesh immersion, that too on exempted days.

"People can use fishing harbour to immerse their idols for which discussions are being held with the VPT. Peda Waltair Beach would be allowed, but not between September 12 and September 16,” the Collector said.

The Collector suggested the organisers especially on the outskirt to conduct immersion procedure in water-bodies near their localities without coming all the way to the RK Beach. However, the stretch between Sagarnagar and other areas could be used for immersion during those days, he said.

The Collector said exclusive desks being set up with officials from four departments - Pollution Control Board, police, EPDCL and fire department at the ACP offices of four zones in the city who would give permission for setting up of pandals for pujas.

Permission will be given from Monday onwards, he said Police Commissioner T Yoganand said that they would take strict action over people making forcible collections for puja.

Obscene dances, usage of loud speakers indiscriminately are strictly prohibited.

He issued 25 conditions for getting permission which include the height restriction of the Ganesh idol.
