Rajamahendravaram: Jyothirao Phule was the person who initiated the campaign to strengthen backward classes and it was N T Rama Rao who instilled self-confidence among BCs, BC Welfare Minister Kollu Ravindra said here on Friday. He interacted with students at Godavari Institute of Engineering and Technology (GIET) near Rajamahendravaram on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Kollu Ravindra said that the Telugu Desam Party government is taking steps to offer higher education to 10 lakh students in which the number of BC students are seven lakh.

Stating that the State government is maintaining transparency in fee reimbursement, he said that the State government is giving Rs 1,600 crore towards fee reimbursement apart from paying pending dues. He explained that the government is paying Rs 214 crore towards fee reimbursement in East Godavari through which 63,000 BC students and 23,000 OBC students are being benefited. He maintained that the government came forward to assist BC students through NTR Vidyannati and NTR foreign education scheme and added that 1,000 students have been sent for higher education this year.

He lamented that the BC students are not being selected for foreign education due to backwardness and called upon the BC students to prepare themselves for higher education. He said that there is still scope for another 920 students in Vidyannati and added that the government is providing training for posts like police constables. He further said that a website has been started to provide 1,000 jobs in 13 private companies.

He announced that the BC Corporation funds were enhanced from Rs 200 crore to Rs 400 crore. He mentioned that awareness seminars would be conducted with students in all the districts. BC welfare commissioner Harshavarthan, BC Corporation chairman Ranganayakulu and GIET Chairman Chaitanya Raju were present on the occasion.
