​Vijayawada: Minister for Mines and Geology Peethala Sujatha asserted that the State government was taking stringent measures to prevent illegal transport of sand. In a video conference with the officials of the Mining Department at command control centre here on Thursday, the Minister said that check posts would be set up in the borders as part of rigorous measures to prevent sand smuggling.

She said that Mining and Police Departments would supervise the check posts. She demanded a clarification from the officials of Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts over the allegations on illegal transport of sand. She directed them to take stringent action against the sand smuggling with the help of police and revenue officials.

Stating that the Mining Department generated revenue of Rs 736 crore in the last eight months through, she asked the officials to update the details of availability of mineral deposits. Sujatha informed that huge manganese and iron deposits were discovered in backward areas of Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts.

“These will be helpful to the State’s economy, apart from creating many opportunities in industrial sector. The department will conduct a scientific survey in all districts for the mineral deposits,” she added.
