Tirupati: `7Hills Marathon’, the first ever marathon held in the temple town of Tirupati, received an overwhelming response from the public. Braving the chilly weather, hundreds of people including young boys and girls and boys gathered at the stadium of SV University well before dawn, accompanied by an equal number of supporters. The stadium reverberated to the beats of hit filmy numbers as the enthusiastic crowd gave a rousing reception to the marathon which got underway. The marathon was held in four categories: 21.5 km (Half marathon), 10 K, 5 K and 3 K-a short dance race in which large number of people including senior citizens and children took part. About 6300 people participated in the marathon.

Disease Eradication through Education and Prevention (DEEP), an NGO, in association with various local associations including Sudharani Foundation, Tirupati Urban Police and district administration conducted the marathon with an aim to motivate people to adapt healthier lifestyles. Interestingly, people gathered at various places to watch and cheer on the participants. Sudharani Foundation organised 17 medical centres at select points along the marathon routes comprising a mobile ambulance, 20 doctors and 35 nursing staff. They attended to about 150 participants who fell ill or sustained minor injuries during the marathon.

Deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa, Irrigation Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, Municipal Minister P Narayana, Forest and Environment Minister B Gopalakrishna Reddy and MLA M Suguna participated in the prize distribution ceremony.
