Amaravati: The Government General Hospital in Guntur is planning to construct extension blocks to render better services to the patients visiting the hospital. Principal Secretary medical and health Poonam Malakondaiah announced that after bifurcation of the State, the outpatients in the government hospitals have been increased up to 27 per cent.

Taking the increase in number of cases into consideration, GGH superintendent Dr Raju Naidu wrote a letter to District Collector and GGH Development Committee Chairman Kantilal Dande to allot at least 10 acres of land in the city to construct extension blocks to the existing GGH.

At present on an average more than 2,000 patients visit the GGH every day. The existing hospital, which was constructed in 1930, was unable to meet the need of the patients visiting the hospital. If the district administration allots land, the government will take further steps to construct the hospital. GGH superintendent Dr Raju will discuss the issue with Poonam Malakondaiah who will visit the GGH within a week.

The government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore to set up virology department. If the extension block is constructed, the GGH will set up the virology department on the new premises and shift the existing dermatology, ENT ward and some other departments to the new block. All emergency departments like kidney, heart, gastroenterology department, and emergency cases will be treated on the old hospital precincts.

If the new extension block is constructed, the number of beds in the GGH will increase, it could able to render better services to the patients. When the number of patients will increase, the MBBS, PG seats in Guntur Medical College will increase.
