NIA team visits accident site, local sleuths to intensify probe

Visakhapatnam: A five -member team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) accompanied by a DIG- level officer of AP visited the Hirakhand Express accident site at Kuneru under Komarada mandal in Vizianagaram district on Monday. Prior to visiting the site, the team also spoke to the injured passengers who are undergoing treatment at Rayagada hospital in Odisha.

The visit of NIA team assumes importance since the Railways suspect sabotage in derailment of Hirakhand Express train. The Union Home Ministry sought a minute report into the accident, said to be worst in the recent times. In addition to central team, local CID sleuths also swung into action and began their probe at Kuneru station.

The Commissioner Railway Safety (South Central Circle) Ram Kripal will conduct a thorough inquiry to ascertain the cause of the train derailment soon.

The CRS team will talk to all the injured personnel presently taking treatment at Rayagada and Parvatipuram hospital in Odisha and King George Hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Ram Kripal will visit the mishap spot at Kuneru station on Tuesday afternoon and talk to all the technical personnel who have been working in that section.

The commissioner said the investigation would cover every aspect to ascertain the exact cause of the tragic incident.

He also announced that any individual or mishap survivors, their relatives and family members of the dead passengers could depose before the probe team as witness to the tragic mishap. They can depose before the office of circle superintendent at Dondaparthi in Vishakhapatnam. The process will continue till the inquiry concludes.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the train derailment rose to 41 on Monday with retrieval of two more bodies from the mangled coaches. Hirakhand Express had derailed at about 11 15 pm on Saturday night at Kuneru railway station under Vizianagaram district.
